Matching bow tattoos on two forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms are shown close together, each carrying a bow tattoo drawn as a single black outline with a looped top, a centre knot and two trailing ends. The larger bow sits on the wrist area of the arm at the upper left, and the smaller bow sits further along the forearm of the arm below it. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the composition is a close, slightly angled view against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud Pritchard cut the ribbon with the kitchen scissors because the good pair was in the parlour drawer with the Christmas cards, and the frost had got into the back porch so the blades were stiff. The silk was the last of a bolt their mother had bought in Hereford the spring before she died, a dull grey-green that had gone the colour of wet slate under the lamp. She measured two lengths against the table edge, one a hand longer than the other, and said nothing about it.

Her sister Ivy watched from the settle with her boots still on, snowmelt pooling grey on the flags. The lambing shed had been full since Sunday and the ewes wanted feeding every four hours, so nobody had slept properly since the bus to Ludlow. "You'll tie them wrong," Ivy said. "You always tie them wrong." Maud looped the first end over, drew the knot through, and matched the trailing tails by holding them against the edge of a pencil, the way their father used to check the width of a gate.

The second bow took longer. Ivy came over in the end and steadied the silk while Maud pinched the loop, and for a minute neither of them spoke, just the clock and the wind pushing sleet across the yard. When it was done they laid the two bows side by side on the oilcloth. They sat there like birds that had landed on the same fence post, one a little larger than the other.

Ivy left for Birmingham on the Tuesday with the smaller bow pinned to her coat and a suitcase held shut with baler twine. Maud stood at the gate until the bus was gone past the chapel, then went back inside and found the spare length of silk on the table, still measured, still uncut. She folded it twice and put it in the drawer with the cards, where it could wait for the thaw.
