Daisy stem on an inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A single daisy on a long, thin stem with feathery green leaves branching along it. The white petals and yellow centre are lightly coloured, with delicate black outlines and a fine, even line weight. The design sits centrally on a pale forearm against a teal fabric background.

Mrs Adeyemi's grandson brought the flower up to Ward 7 at ten past two, wrapped in a sandwich bag with a wet paper towel round the stem, and asked me whether it was allowed. He had pulled it from the verge outside the allotments on Dunmow Road, he said, the one with feathery leaves that smelt of apples when you crushed them. His nan had told him to find the yellow middle, the bit that looked like a bruised egg yolk, and to bring it in quick before it wilted in the car park. I put it in a plastic beaker of water on the locker, where it leaned a little towards the window as if it had somewhere else to be.
The ward ran on its usual hum after that. Obs at half two, a drip swapped at three, a man in bay four asking the same question about his trousers four times. Somewhere around quarter to four I stopped at the window with my tea and watched the stem tilt, petal by petal, until the small white crown was looking straight at me across the room.
At five the grandson came back for it, because his nan had asked for it, and I handed him the beaker with both hands. She wanted the petals dried on her kitchen sill, he said, for a pot of tea she had been promising to make since March. I told him to tell her the nurses had kept it safe. He nodded and went off down the stairwell with his sandwich bag, and the room smelt faintly of apples for the rest of my shift.
