Lupin sprig on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A tall spike of lupin-style flowers rises along a thin stem, with a clover-like bloom and pointed leaves branching off lower down. The work uses fine black outlines with light shading inside the petals and leaves, and no colour. The sprig is centred on a pale lower leg above a white sock, with plain background.

The lupins in Bay Nine had gone leggy again, and Imke Harrow stood among them with a pair of snips, counting spikes. Forty-one flowers on the tallest stem, pea-shaped and grey-blue under the lamps, each set along the stalk like buttons on a coat. The agronomy log wanted a yield figure before the end of the shift. It did not want to hear that she had been counting for an hour because the numbers kept her from thinking about the clover.

The clover had come up by accident, a stray seed from a packet labelled for forage, and it had pushed into the same trough and knotted its roots through theirs. Sable from the water crew had wanted it pulled. "Nothing in this ring grows for no reason," she had said, and Imke had not argued, because the clover bloomed a week ahead of everything else and the bees, which were not supposed to exist aboard either, came to it first.
On the night of the reading, Imke cut the tallest stalk with its clover head and two pointed leaves, wrapped them in wax paper, and carried them down the curved corridor to the seed vault. The old registry sat behind its glass there, rows of brittle sheets from the planet nobody on board had seen. She pressed the sprig between two boards and wrote on the label in neat capitals: LUPINUS, WITH CLOVER. COLLECTED IN THE DARK CYCLE. Then she pinned it to the wall beside the others.
The vault lights dimmed as they always did, and she left her own lamp on for the length of one breath. In that breath the stem looked exactly as it had in the trough, as if nothing had been taken from it at all.
