Flowering sprig on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single sprig with a thin, curving stem carries three clusters of small five-petalled flowers and several pointed leaves. The linework is fine and even, with some leaves lightly shaded in grey to add depth. The design sits centrally on pale, freckled skin against a plain white background.

The lane out of Hollin Bottom runs past the last cottage, and you learn to walk it without looking at the hedge, because Aunt Marr says the hedge keeps count of pickers who take too much. You carry the small knife in your apron pocket and a paper bag for seed, and it is the second week of July, when the wood turns from green to the grey-green of old coins.

Marr has taught you the difference between the two plants that grow in the ditch. One sets its leaves in pairs like folded hands. The other lets them alternate up the stem, each one sharp at the tip, like someone counting on their fingers. The blooms are the easy part. Each small flower has five petals and a yellow eye, and they gather in threes at the top of the stalk as if they are waiting for a bus that never comes. You cut only what already shows seed heads.
On the Thursday the stalk you want is near the stile, where the stem bends twice before it reaches the light. Another stem crosses it, and you stop with the knife open. Marr would say take the one that crosses, because it has already been passed by. So you take the lower sprig with its cluster half open, and leave the taller one standing over the path with all three blossoms still closed.
That evening you tie the cut stalk with green thread to the gate of Widow Penrose, who has no garden and never asks where anything comes from. In the morning the bundle is gone. In its place is a jar of honey and a slip of paper that says only: Good hands. Keep the knife sharp.
