The blue box came ashore on Carrick Skerry on the second spring tide of the month, the way it always did, and you were halfway down the wet steps with the boathook before you remembered you had retired from wrecks in March. The sea had scoured its paint to the colour of an old bruise. Someone had scratched a word across its door in letters you could still read, though you could not have said what language they belonged to.

The eclipse had put the day out at noon, and the gulls had gone quiet on the ledges as if someone had cut their wire. You had lit the lamp early, out of habit, and its beam swept across the box and the black water beyond. Something rolled up the slipway behind you with a sound like a kettle dragged over gravel. It was a grey casing with a plunger for an arm and one cracked eye, and it said through a rattling grille that it was lost. It did not say exterminate. It said, very quietly, 'Lamp.'
You understood, eventually, that it had been circling the dark sun for longer than the lighthouse had stood, and that the orbit had snagged on the tide. So you fetched the spare wick from under the stairs, the brass one your father swore was lucky, and you fitted it into the casing with a spanner and a good deal of swearing. Then you turned the thing to face the sky. The rim of the eclipse flared gold. Inside the box, the windows lit one by one, and the grey shell rose, trembling, to a height it had not reached in years.
When the sun came back at half past one, there was only a scatter of grey plates on the slipway and the blue box standing square on the stones, its door ajar. You went inside to see what had been left for you. There was a kettle, a warm cup, and a note in your own handwriting that said only: keep the lamp lit, we'll be back for the next one.
