The fog came in off the Skerry at four o'clock, and by the time you had the lamp trimmed it had swallowed the jetty whole. That was when you heard the wheeze. It was a sound like a cart dragged over gravel, and it came up the steps from the landing, then stopped, and a blue box stood on the wet stones with its door shut and the little lamp on its roof unlit.

You had kept the Skerry light for nineteen years, and nothing had ever landed on it that did not come in a boat. Mrs Abernethy from the mainland had once brought a goat. This was different. The paint was the blue of a gull's back in good weather, chipped at the corners, and across the top someone had lettered BAD WOLF in square white capitals that were beginning to run in the damp. A young man in a long coat leaned out of the door before you could decide whether to be frightened.

"Sorry," he said. "Wrong rock. Is this the one with the dog?"

There was no dog, you told him so. He looked genuinely crestfallen, then pleased, as though the wrongness were a kind of promise. He asked to borrow your lamp oil and a pencil, and you gave him both. He drew your lighthouse on the back of a tide table while the fog thinned, and when you looked up the box had gone, leaving only a faint blue smudge on the stones. In the margin of the tide table he had drawn your own lamp room, every window lit, and beneath it a date, nineteen years on from today, that you were not yet ready to read.
