The cake was the first thing to go wrong, and the hire van was the second. By half eleven we were standing in the lane behind St Mary's with a sponge that had slumped on one side and a bride who kept checking the sky. Clouds were piling over the church tower as if they had been invited. Gran, who had outlived two husbands and a sewing machine, said it was only weather and we were to stop fussing.

Then a blue police box came round the corner, slowly, wheezing like an accordion left out in the rain. I assumed it was a joke from Dad's mates. It stopped beside the lych gate and the lamp on its roof flickered on, pale as a moon behind cloud. A man in a cardigan the colour of wet slate leaned out with a clipboard. "Cake for the Pembroke wedding?" Nobody argued. We carried it in between us, and the inside was far bigger than the outside, which Dad said was impossible and then spent ten minutes measuring with a tape.

The man asked Gran for the rose from her hat, the pale one her mother had grown from a cutting. He promised it would be back before the first dance. Gran unpinned it, looked at the man for a long moment, and handed it over as if she had been expecting the request since 1961.

When the door opened again, the rose sat in a jam jar on the top table, petals unbruised, and the sponge stood perfectly level. The clouds over the tower had split into a neat round hole. The lamp on the roof went out, and Gran tucked a fresh pin into her hat and said nothing at all.
