The blue box was standing on the fish quay when we tied up on Tuesday, plain as a telephone kiosk and twice as out of place, with a dead lamp on its roof and POLICE PUBLIC CALL BOX across the top in white. Nobody on the Marigold would own to putting it there. Skipper said it was the Coastguard's. The Coastguard said it was ours. Then Dougie Pratt swore he saw the door open and a man in a long coat look up at the gulls before stepping back inside, and we all went quiet, because the box had started to hum.

I went in with him, God knows why. It was bigger inside than the wheelhouse, bigger than the church hall, with brass rails and a glass column going up into the dark and a smell like hot dust and oranges. The man in the coat was pulling levers and muttering about Hull being on fire in some other year. He wanted something for the console, and I had the bunch Mrs Keel gave me for the Marigold's blessing, so I handed them over. He turned one in his fingers, red at the middle and gold at the edges, and said it was the only colour on the whole dock that hadn't gone grey.

When we came out the box had gone. There was a ring of damp petals on the stones where it had stood, and one rose lying on the rail of the boat, still wet, which I am fairly certain I had not put there. The skipper says it's a fishing story and I've stopped arguing.

Tell Mam I'll be home Thursday, and that I've got her a present that isn't a rose. Love to you and Grandad.
