Colour neo-traditional tattoo on the shoulder blade showing a Dalek, a red rose with a blue crystal, and a banner reading BADWOLF.

Dalek, rose and BADWOLF banner on a shoulder

Neo-trad · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A Dalek sits behind a red rose with pink petals and a blue crystal cluster, with a teal leaf below. A grey banner across the base of the Dalek reads BADWOLF, and small star sparkles fill the background. Bold black outlines and smooth colour fills give it a bright, graphic finish, with a light grey shadow beneath the design.

Dear Priya,

You will think I have finally lost the plot, but I have been up since five going through the photos from Saturday. Not the faces, though heaven knows we all look like our parents now. I keep returning to the one Dev took of the old science block, the window that never shut, and the gravel where Hollis made us line up for fire drills.

Do you remember the rock from the cutting behind the bypass? Hollis swore it was only quartz, but you carried it in your pencil case for a whole term. When the lid split in double maths there was blue inside, pale as frozen sea. We swore we would halve it someday. Dev told me at the bar that you had given your half to Tom Gallagher the year he played the Dalek in the panto, and that he had kept it in his coat pocket ever since. I don't know if that's true. Dev is not a reliable witness.

The panto is why I'm writing. Somebody has been chalking BADWOLF on the sports hall wall again, the way the drama club did the summer we were fifteen, with a rose beside it and a little tin robot with its arm out. The caretaker wants it scrubbed before the open evening. I went over there on Thursday with my coat on and stood in the car park for a good ten minutes reading it.

So I've decided. Dev is ringing the council to tell them it's heritage, and I've said I'll be the one to stand in front of the wall if they try. I still have my half of the rock in my coat pocket, where it has been since the bypass. Write back and tell me where yours went.
