Dalek with vines in black and grey
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded Dalek, the Doctor Who creature, sits diagonally across the skin with its dome, eyestalk and studded casing rendered in smooth greyscale. Thin vines with leaves and spiral tendrils wrap around the base and rise up past the top of the figure. The black and grey shading gives the image a three-dimensional look against the plain skin tone.

Mrs Pargeter had it in the corner of the glasshouse behind the vicarage, the thing nobody would move because it had come over the wall on the night of the great frost and simply stopped there, its plunger arm raised as if it meant to make a point. Her husband Len swore it was a boiler. Her grandson swore it was a bin. Everyone else in Little Wendle called it the Tin Man's Cousin and crossed the lane when the wind got up.

Then the bindweed came. It started at the foot of the thing, a green thread no thicker than cotton, and by June it had climbed the studded flanks and gone up past the dome, curling into little spirals as if it were counting. Len cut it back every Saturday. Every Sunday it was longer. Mrs Pargeter said nothing, because the vines were the only thing in that glasshouse that seemed pleased to be there.
In August the rector came round with his secateurs and his good intentions, and he took one snip at the stem nearest the eyestalk. The eyestalk turned. Not fast. Just enough to look at him, the way a cat considers a sparrow. He dropped the secateurs in the rhubarb and did not come back for the harvest supper.
Len sold the greenhouse to a man from the coast who paid in cash and never asked what the thing was for. The vines came with it, of course. They always do. On a clear night you can still see the leaves from the lane, lifting towards the top of the glass, reaching for a sky that has never once looked back.
