TARDIS police box with roses on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A blue police box with a lit sign and paned windows sits centrally, flanked by two pink roses with green leaves. The bold black outlines and soft shading give the design a traditional feel, and the tattoo fills most of the frame on pale skin.

The brothers at Saint Aldhelm's had agreed, after a long chapter meeting, that the blue box in the herb garden was a storage shed and would be treated as one. You knew better. You had heard it hum during Compline, and on the feast of the Annunciation its door had swung open by itself, letting out a smell of ozone and wet hay.

Brother Cuthbert, who kept the bees, insisted the box had arrived with the stone for the new dormitory wall. Brother Ambrose said it had stood there since the Conquest and that the lamp on its roof was a votive. The Abbot, a practical man with a ledger, wanted it moved. So on Thursday you and Cuthbert hauled it on a sledge to the south wall, where the old roses climbed the flint in pink ranks, and you stopped, because the door had opened from the inside and a woman in a long coat was standing there holding a teapot.
"You're letting the warmth out," she said. "Shut it, there's a good man, and tell me what year this is."
You told her. She swore in a language that sounded like Latin left out in the rain, then went back inside and came out again with a sprig of rose she had snipped from the wall, which she pressed into your palm. "Keep that. Whenever the box goes cold, you'll know it's time to fetch me."
The Abbot's ledger still lists the box as a shed. You keep the sprig tucked inside your breviary, and some nights the lamp on the roof glows blue through the cloister window. In January, out of all season, the roses on the south wall came into bloom.
