Ada Pring had sixteen years of buying scrap off the lads on Maudlin Quay, and she could price a boiler by the sound it made when dropped. The thing that came off the night boat in March made no sound at all. It was a grey-black casing the height of a wheelie bin, with a domed head, a stalk topped by a little bulb, and a plunger arm folded against its side like a man keeping his hand in his coat. Ruben from the tug wanted two quid for it. Ada gave him fifteen pounds and told him she wasn't a charity.

She wheeled it to the back of the yard and wrote it in the ledger as ferrous, sundry, one. The rows of dots on its skirt looked like rivets, neat as a sewing box. She tapped one with a biro and it was warm. Nobody had told her scrap could be warm.

By the second week she noticed it turned each morning to face the office window, though the wheels left no marks in the yard grit. When she tried to shove it towards the crusher it rolled back, slow and reasonable, to the gate, and stopped on the threshold as if waiting to be let in.

On the Friday she switched off the lights and sat on an upturned crate with her tea going cold. The plunger lifted, tapped twice on the concrete, and a flat voice said the yard was now under new management. Ada looked at the ledger, then at the casing, and wrote beneath the entry in her careful capitals: SETTLED, FIFTEEN POUNDS, PAID IN FULL. Then she unlocked the gate for it.
