The barge Mabel Rose sits low in the water below Reading lock, and you are the one who keeps the cabin radio tuned past the static. Your father wears the same brown overcoat on every lock, and he has never once danced. Then the gates groan open and he is up on the cabin roof, hat tipped low, one arm flung toward the towpath as if the whole grey river belongs to him.

The lock-keeper's boy laughs. A woman with a pram stops on the bank. You want to hide behind the coal bunker, but he kicks out a leg, slides along the wet tin, and his long coat flares out behind him like a black sail. He spins once with two fingers holding his hat on, and the barge drifts out into the current with nobody at the tiller but the wind.

Later, when the tow rope is coiled and the kettle is singing, he tells you the trick is to be a shadow. Keep the detail for the edges, he says, and let the dark do the rest. You think about that all the way down to Abingdon, and about the way he stood on the lock side afterwards, a cut-out against the lamps.

At dawn you take the tiller. The river is flat as a pewter plate and the mist lifts off it in slow rags. Behind you the gate clanks shut, and you find yourself lifting one hand from the rail, just to see whether the morning will follow.
