The gum had worn loose and I could not help myself.

At Hatton the lock wheel jammed halfway, and I had to climb the beam with the windlass in my teeth. When I finally got the gate open, Father was waiting on the far side with his cap pushed back and his good hand out. I passed the tin across the timber to him. He took it, turned it over twice, and then, instead of letting go, he caught my fingers in his and held them there, rough and cold, while the water roared out beneath us. He said nothing. He never does.

Tell your mother the tin is safe and the lavender still smells of her garden. I think I will keep it a while longer before it goes back to you. There is room in the cabin, and the stove is warm, and Father has promised to teach me the knot he used to tie to the bollard in his own mother's barge.
