Old Brandt took the stick out of his fist without a word, cut a hand's width off the end with his knife, and gave it back. Then he filled the dented cup from the kettle and put it into the boy's other hand, and held his own hand around both of them until the boy stopped shaking. I watched from the door and thought of you, which is foolish, because you never once let anyone hold your hand around anything.

The pass opens in May. The inn will have a new roof by then, if the timber comes up before the thaw, and I have asked the Ferrara men to leave the stick you carved behind the bar so I can stop tripping over it. I know you will say you were only borrowing it. Come back and say so to my face.

I have kept the cup full. Write when the post goes down, even if it is only to say the road is bad.
