Dandelion and ladybird on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A dandelion clock sits on the ankle, with its stem curving down towards the heel and a small ladybird crawling on the stem. Several loose seeds drift upwards above it, rendered with fine dark linework and small dots. The tattoo is in black ink only, with the design framed against plain skin and a grey floor.

The seventh clock had gone to seed before the king's messenger reached the orchard gate, so Marta had to count the puffs herself. She stood on the cold stone with her apron full of crusts and her lips pursed, while a ladybird on the stalk beside her opened its red wing cases, as if it too had a wish to send off.

Every spring the kingdom of Lowmarrow held its Blowing. The king had decreed that whoever sent a seed furthest across the river would have their wish granted, so the village children had spent a month blowing themselves dizzy, spitting seeds into the wind and wishing for ponies. Marta did not want a pony. She wanted her brother home from the salt mines in the north, and she knew better than to shout such a thing at a clock.
She cupped the head in both hands and breathed out so softly that the seeds hardly stirred. They rose instead of scattering. Up they went past the orchard wall, past the bell tower and the crows, a loose grey crowd climbing the blue as if someone had called them home. The king's steward squinted and sent for a measuring rod. Nobody in Lowmarrow could say which seed had gone furthest, because not one of them came back down.
That evening the ladybird was still on the stalk when Marta walked home, and she let it crawl onto her wrist. The north road was long, but the wind had turned, and somewhere a man with dust in his hair was walking south with a seed caught in his collar. She did not wait to learn whether the wish had been granted. She had only needed it to be on its way.
