The bowmaker's daughter, Ellen Tallow, loosed two arrows from the top field on the morning the river came over the bridge. The first went north over the mill and nobody ever found it. Thirty years later the school held its reunion in the same hall, under the same stage curtain, with a trestle of squash and a kettle that only worked if you held the lid down. Tom Harrow came in late carrying a box of paper plates and found Ellen by the window. She was telling a boy with a lanyard that the yew had been felled in 1994, and that the arrow had been kept, its head rusted to the wood and its vine still curled around it in a drawer at the council offices.

"You never went back for the first one," Tom said. Ellen shrugged. "I aimed the second," she said. "The first was only the one I was frightened of." She took the plates from him and laid them out in a row, one for each name on the register, and the last plate she turned face down on the cloth, the way her mother used to set the table for the boatmen who had not come home from the river.
