Dandelion seeds and hope on a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dandelion seedhead sits on the inner wrist, with its stem curving down and loose seeds drifting off to the right. The word hope is written in lowercase script beneath the stem. The linework is black with some soft grey shading, and the composition is simple and centred on the wrist.

Before the bells rang at St Oswin's, Marta Quill carried the last loaves out of the oven and found the lane already scattered with dandelion clocks. Nobody had sown them. Old Harker, who swept the mill yard, said they blew over the wall every spring from the field where the flood had left its gate, and that a clock puffed in the dark would carry whatever you said into it, provided you meant it.

Her brother Tobin had not spoken since the water took the lower mill. He sat on the step with his hands folded, the way their mother used to sit when the dough would not rise. Marta set a loaf beside him, still steaming through the cloth. Bread first, she thought, talk after.
He picked a clock from the cobbles and held it up to the grey light, counting the seeds the way he used to count sacks. Then he pursed his lips and blew. The seeds lifted, turned once in the cold air, and streamed off towards the river and the far bank, where the new mill's chimney was only starting to show. He said one word into the wind, and Marta did not ask what it was.
They blew clock after clock until the sun cleared the roofs. By then the lane was bare stalks and bread crumbs, and a single seed had caught in the cuff of Tobin's coat. He left it there, pale and trembling, and walked off with it towards the water, as if he meant to see where it went.
