Script quote reading there is always hope
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of an upper chest and shoulder with the words 'there is always hope' written in black cursive script, with 'hope' on a second line below. The linework is fine and even, with the letters slightly slanted and joined in a handwriting style. The tattoo is shown in black ink on warm skin under soft, low lighting, and the composition is cropped to the collarbone with the face not visible.

Forty-one days out from Falmouth and the water has gone the colour of pewter. We lost two casks of lamp oil and the cook's cat, which I suspect is the only creature aboard that understands the weather. Your mother will want to know whether I am eating. Tell her yes. Tell her the biscuits have weevils and I have named every one of them.
Last Sunday the second mate found me on the forecastle staring at the horizon with the pencil still in my hand. He asked what I was drawing. I showed him the words I had copied from the back of your last letter, the ones you wrote in that small slanting hand and underlined twice. He read them, nodded, and said it was the only sensible thing he had read in months. I did not tell him I had been trying to make my own hand look like yours.
So I am keeping them where you kept them for me. There is always hope, you wrote, and the wind has come round to the north-west, which Halloran says is good, so I have decided to believe him. When we reach the Horn I will post this from the first port with a proper mail sack. Keep the lamp lit on the step.
