Fine line black lettering reading hope with a puzzle piece outline beside it, tattooed on the inner wrist.

Hope script and puzzle piece on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of the word hope in a thin, joined script, with a outlined puzzle piece to the right. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the design sits on the inner wrist beside the hand. The plain skin background and soft lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The big top came down on Tuesday, and we folded it the way Dad taught us, corner to corner, with nobody talking. Mrs Okonedo's ponies went to a farm near Tewkesbury. The strongman sold his barbell to a scrap man in Hereford for less than the petrol cost. What's left is us, the wagons, and the sign over the gate that you painted the year before you left, the one with the tin puzzle piece nailed beside the word HOPE.

Remember you said the piece was the wrong shape, that it would never fit anywhere? Dad said it was the only piece that mattered, because it was the one somebody would come back for. I thought he was daft. Now I'm sitting in the caravan with the piece in my lap, rubbing the rust off with a bit of wet rag, and I can't stop wondering which of us he meant.

We're off to Shrewsbury on Friday for a car park fête. Three days of coconut shies and a fire-eater who hasn't got his licence sorted. It's not much, but the kids still stand at the edge of the field with their faces lit up, and that's the thing we swore we'd keep going for.

Come home if you can. Bring the paints. I'll hold the ladder.

Love, Nell
