A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the dandelion clock in her fist before the bus was even in sight, its seeds already grey and tight as old pennies. "Blow it, then," said her mother from the doorstep, drying her hands on the apron that had been her own mother's. "You'll wish for something, and then you'll go anyway."

She walked to the end of the lane instead, past the chapel wall where the starlings were working over the gutter. The clock was the same one she had picked at seven, when Dad still whistled in the potato rows. Miss Harker had written words on the blackboard that week, fearless, dreamer, reckless, carefree, lonely, and the class had copied them into their exercise books without asking what they were for. Nell had thought they were a list of things a person could choose to be.

At the gate she finally blew. The seeds lifted in a rush, thirty or so of them, and went off over the hedge like a handful of thrown sparks. Two starlings broke from the gutter and chased them, then gave up and wheeled away towards the reservoir. Nell watched the last few seeds catch on the wind and drop, one by one, onto the lane behind her.

She had counted the seeds wrong on purpose, she realised. Her mother would still be on the step, pretending not to watch. The bus would round the bend in ten minutes with its engine coughing. Nell pushed the bare stalk into her coat pocket, where it snapped, and she did not go back for the rest.
