Dandelion seeds, birds and script on shoulder blade

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a dandelion head on the left, with its seeds drifting to the right and turning into small bird silhouettes. Below and beside them, black cursive script reads 'i carry your heart' and '(i carry it in my heart)'. The ink is solid black with fine, delicate linework and no shading, set on bare skin across the upper back.

The letter came on a Tuesday, in his square capitals on the back of a council envelope. He had moved to Lincoln for the work and was learning to make bread in a shop with a bad oven. At the bottom, almost as an afterthought, he had written the line he always wrote when he didn't know how to end things: I carry your heart, you daft thing. That evening she took the jar out to the back garden and tipped it over the fence. The wind was coming from the west, and the seeds lifted all at once, a loose grey cloud that broke apart over the hedge. Some went low into the nettles. Others climbed and thinned until they were only specks against the sky, and then, if you squinted, they were starlings, or swifts, or nothing at all. She stood with the empty jar in her hands until the light went, and then she went inside to write back.
