Dandelion seeds turning into birds on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a dandelion clock with its seeds drifting away and becoming a flock of birds rising diagonally up the forearm. The dandelion head is rendered with soft gradient shading and fine radiating lines, while the birds are dark silhouettes with simple wing detail. The piece is entirely black and grey, photographed on a light skin tone against a dark leather surface.

"Count the puffs, Kallis, and do not let the wind count them for you," my father said, pressing a fat grey flower into my fist as though it were a coin. We stood on the terrace above the olive presses at Lindos, the sea below us the colour of wet slate, and the goats had already wandered off to find something green to ruin.

I blew, of course. Every child on Rhodes knew the old wish: one breath, and the globe came apart into a hundred little parachutes, each with its tiny hook of a seed. My father said the seeds were not really flying anywhere. They were looking for the sky they had come from. I thought he was talking nonsense to keep me still.
Years later, after the Macedonian ships had come and gone and my father lay under the fig tree, I found the same flower growing through a crack in the harbour steps. I bent to blow on it and stopped, because the seeds had not yet lifted. They waited the way a crowd waits at a gate. I cupped my hands and breathed as gently as I could, and watched them rise over the water, shredding into dark specks that wheeled and dipped and turned into gulls, seven of them, then nine, climbing the air until I could no longer tell which was seed and which was bird.
I have told that story to every boy who asks why I stand so long on the quay with my face to the wind. Most of them laugh. The gulls, I notice, never do.
