Dandelion silhouettes carried by seeds
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two large dandelion clocks on stems, with a trail of small silhouetted figures appearing to float up on the seeds. The shapes are filled solid in black with fine radiating lines on the seed heads, and there is no shading or colour. The design runs diagonally across the side of the torso, with the larger dandelion at the lower left and the figures drifting toward the upper right.

Sabine Pike had been told never to blow on a dandelion clock within sight of the big wheel, but she was nine, the wheel was turning, and the seeds on the common were the finest she had ever seen. She picked the tallest stalk she could reach, held it up like a candle, and blew.

The seeds did not drift. They lifted. Each one carried a thread of the fair with it: the brass of the carousel, a shout from the coconut shy, the sour smell of toffee apples. Behind her, the Hesketh boy who ran the strength hammer was already reaching for his cap, and his boots had left the grass.
Old Mrs Hesketh sat on an upturned crate by the caravans and did not look up from her knitting. 'Forty years I've watched folk blow on those,' she said. 'Most of them come down again. The ones who wish hard enough go up to the dark end of the sky, where the wishes get counted.'
Sabine grabbed at the nearest ankle, which was a mistake, because it belonged to her own brother, and by then he was laughing at the top of the sky, a shape no bigger than a fingernail. She stood with the bare stalk in her fist until the wheel stopped and the lamps went out one by one. Then she went to the crate and asked how a person comes down.
'You don't,' said Mrs Hesketh, and counted her stitches. 'You wait for someone with a longer breath.'
