Flock of birds on the inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A row of six small black bird silhouettes flies diagonally across the inner forearm, each one shown in a different wing position and getting slightly larger towards the wrist side of the arm. The linework is solid black with clean edges and no shading, and the tattoo is set against plain, pale skin. The photo is taken at close range with a dark grey top filling the background.

Dear Ada,

The geese went over the lock at first light again, six of them strung out like a dropped necklace, and I stood on the gunwale with the tiller under my arm and counted them the way you taught me. Six, and the last one always a bit behind, pulling its wings in to catch up. Dad says they're heading for the marshes below Ely. He says that every October, as if the marshes might have moved.
The barge is riding low this year. We took on forty tonnes of coal at Stourport, and the Severn has been brown and fast since the rain, so Dad won't let me take the bow through the weir cut without him. Mum's rope is still in the locker, the blue one with the frayed eye. I've been splicing it at night by the stove, which is the only warm place on board, and thinking about how she used to hum when she tied off.
Here is the thing I meant to write. Yesterday the last goose dropped out of line near the bridge, circled back, and then caught the others up as if it had decided something. I don't know what the decision was. But I think about it more than I should. Dad says the wind did it. Maybe it did.
Write when you can. Tell me if the Thames is as wide as they say. I'll keep the blue rope until you come up the cut to fetch it.
Love, Nell
