Small fine line Om symbol on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small, delicate black tattoo on the inner wrist and forearm of a hand held up against a dark background. The design is a thin, single-weight linework symbol that resembles an Om character with a curved tail. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the composition is centred on the tattoo with the hand and painted nails framing it.

He had a slate under his arm and he turned it toward her. On it, in chalk gone grey from rain, was a single curled mark, a loop that opened into a long thin tail, like a bird folding itself in flight or a sound drawn out until it ran out of breath. "My mother said the bridge would know it," he said. "She said you'd know it too."
Mireille knew it. It was cut into the lintel above the toll-house door, worn almost smooth, and nobody had ever asked what it meant. Her grandmother had called it the crossing mark and said it was for people who had nothing to give but a true thing said aloud. Mireille had always thought this was just a way of making the old bridge sound grander than it was.
She lifted the gate. "Say it, then," she said. The boy hummed the mark, low and thin, and the river under the arches seemed for a moment to hum back. She wrote nothing in the ledger that day. She only stepped aside and let him walk onto the planks.
