Three small birds on a wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three small solid black bird silhouettes are tattooed on the inner wrist, with two birds angled upward and one lower, suggesting flight. The birds are simple filled shapes with no interior detail, set against pale skin. The black and white photo is softly focused, with a hand raised near a grey knit hat on the left and a blurred background.

The cage has hung from the same nail in the lamp room since before your father's time, and nobody at Brackenhurst Colliery has ever asked why the canaries are kept when the deputies carry their own gas detectors now. You lift the wire door with a bent finger, the way your mam showed you, and wait for the bird to decide whether the morning is worth it.

Three went down with the early shift. Only one came back up with its feathers still puffed against the cold, and Tomas, the deputy, swears the other two were lost to a bad draught at the Low Main. You let him believe it. You know what you saw: the middle one folding its wings against the timber and dropping from its perch like a glove let fall from a hand. Nobody wrote that down. Nobody needed to.

Today the lamp room door bangs in the wind. Outside, the spoil heap has gone green with new grass, and the winding wheel has been still since the spring strike. Three dark shapes lift off the fence post by the water tank, circle the pithead once, and climb past the chimney as if the ground had never asked anything of them.

You pocket the cage key and walk down the lane to the bus shelter, where the timetable is still in the old hand. The birds are over the hill now, too small to tell apart. You find you are not sorry to be left on the ground, and you let the door swing shut behind you.
