Sun and planets trail on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm and wrist show a tattoo of a sun with a human-like face at the top, followed by a descending line of planets and small dots. The planets are drawn with fine, shaded linework, with one ringed planet and a small comet-like streak near the middle. The tattoo is entirely grey and black on a warm skin tone, photographed against a wooden floor.

The sun-king of Ammerlow had grown too proud to come down from his window, so each dawn he sent a child down the stair of the sky to count the barley. The children were round and cold and very quiet, and they went one after another, the largest first, each a little further from their father's warmth. The villagers called them the Wanderers and left bread on the wall for them.

The last of the line was a small grey one called Orrin, who wore a ring of dust around his middle like a belt he had been given and could never take off. He reached the lowest field at dusk, where a girl named Bet Halloran was mending a gate with a length of wire. She asked him what he was counting. He said he did not know, because his father had never said. So she counted with him: the sheaves, the goats, the crows on the fence, until the stars came out and he could no longer see the field at all.
Orrin went home by the long way, through the sky's back gardens, and found his father grown dim from waiting. The sun-king asked what he had learned. Orrin said the barley was three sheaves short, that a girl had counted with him, and that it had been the best part of the day. His father said nothing for a long while.
The sun-king, who had never once been counted himself, found he could not stop looking down. The next morning he came down the stair on his own feet, slow and blazing, with a thin bright tail behind him like a comet's hem. Where his light touched the fields the barley turned gold in an afternoon, and Bet Halloran, shading her eyes at the gate, swore he winked.
