Dandelion seeds turning into birds with script
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A dandelion head sits at the lower left, releasing seeds that become small birds rising towards the upper right. The birds are shaded in black, blue and cyan, with fine dotted seed lines fading into the white background. The words Life is Beautiful run along the bottom in script with a small outlined heart at the end.

Margaret had been told the dandelions along the churchyard wall were a nuisance, so when the flower girl ran off down the gravel path with her fists full of them, she did not stop her. The seeds did not drift the way seeds should. They lifted in a loose bunch, turned over once in the July light, and then, one after another, opened into birds. A black one went first, then two blue ones the colour of a gas flame, then a cyan pair that circled the lych gate twice before settling on the roof of Dennis's good Rover. Somebody laughed and said it was a trick of the sun. Margaret kept her eyes on the birds, because the alternative was looking at Ruth, who had not spoken to her sister since Easter.
Ruth came over with a cup of weak tea and stood beside her at the wall. "Those are your birds," she said. "You always did want something to leave." Margaret did not answer. The last bird, a small dark one, was climbing above the oak, and the seeds still spinning off the bare head caught the sun and went up after it.
Ruth pressed the cup into her hand and nudged her towards the gate. "Go on, then," she said. "I'll see to the cake. It's already fallen once, it can hardly fall twice." Margaret laughed for the first time that day, and she went down the path with the tea going cold and the birds still rising over the church roof.
