The postcard came to the bakery in Saltmarsh Cross three weeks after the funeral it was meant to skip, and Marnie read it standing up, flour to the elbows, while the proving dough sulked under its cloth. Her brother's handwriting leaned the way it always had, as if the words were running for a bus. Be brave with your life, he had written, and under it, in smaller letters, the way he used to sign off on her school reports: Don't wait for the weather to improve.

She had not seen Tobias since the spring he sold the van and drove east with a map he wouldn't let her touch. The card had a picture of a mesa on the front, all rust and bruise-coloured shadow, and no return address. Only the postmark, a town she had to find on the atlas in the back office, a place with a name like a sneeze.

She finished the loaves, because the Thursday order was already promised to the café on Pell Street, and then she sat on an upturned crate in the yard and read the card again. The flour dust drifted off her wrists. Somewhere a dog was barking at a van that wasn't hers.

That evening she pinned the postcard above the till, and the next morning she rang the bakery's owner and asked for a month off, then two, then said she didn't know how many. The atlas went into her bag with the bread knife she'd been given at twenty. The road east, when she reached the first of it, ran straight as a ruled line through the dust, and she drove it with the window down and her hair going everywhere.
