Fine line script lettering design of the word beautiful with a flowing line extending from each side, drawn in black on a cream background.

Beautiful in fine line script

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows the word beautiful written in a joined, cursive script, with a single thin black stroke that runs out from both ends of the word. The linework is even and monoline, with no shading. The black ink sits on a plain cream, slightly textured background, and the design is centred with generous empty space above and below.

Dear Tom, the brushes are in the tin under the bench, not in the lavender water where you left them, and Mr Pollard's cart is still waiting for its board. Don't let him tell you the gilt is dry when it isn't.

You'll want to know about the board that came in on Tuesday, the one with the single word. Mrs Ada Fenwick wanted "beautiful" painted across the width of her bakery window and nothing else, no prices, no name. I told her a word that short would look lost on glass that size. She said she had paid for the space and she would decide what filled it.

So I did it her way. I pencilled the letters first, with the long b leaning back on its heels, and I made every join without lifting the brush, the way old Hadley taught us, so the whole word ran like one breath. Then I drew the tails. One runs out from the first letter and off the left edge of the board, and the other leaves the last letter and runs off the right, thin as a hair. I left both ends bare so they would look as if they could keep going past the frame.

Mrs Fenwick stood in the street a long while with her arms folded. Then she asked if I could carry the ends a little further, so they would reach the bricks on either side. I did. Tell Mr Pollard the window is hers now, and that she sends a loaf for your mother with her thanks.
