Dandelions over a watercolour wash
Fine line · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a yellow dandelion flower head on a thin black stem, a seeding dandelion clock with loose drifting seeds, and a closed green bud. Dark, fine outlines define the petals and stems, while soft yellow, green and turquoise washes spread behind the motifs like watercolour. The three photographs show the piece from different angles, with the colour fields and linework filling most of each frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Harold Pike had mown the verge for thirty-one years and had never once let a dandelion reach the clock stage. Then a bud appeared on the Lamberts' side of the fence, green and tight as a pea pod, and he found himself watching it over his tea each morning.

Mrs Lambert had left him a note in June: Please leave the weeds, they are the only bees we've got. He folded it into his cardigan pocket and mown the strip twice anyway. The bud outlasted the frost, the dry week and his temper, and by the first Tuesday in July it had split open, yellow as custard.
A week later the head had gone to a grey-white sphere, each seed hung on its own fine thread like a wish that had not yet decided where to land. Harold stood at the fence in his slippers with a jam jar in one hand and the wind coming off the reservoir. He did not blow. He counted instead: forty-one, then a gust took six at once and he lost his place.
He knocked on the Lamberts' door at dusk with the jar still in his hand. Mrs Lambert came out in a dressing gown, holding a teapot. "You're meant to blow them," she said. "Go on." He did, and the last seeds lifted over the hedge, catching the porch light, and he walked home without touching the mower.
