Daisy with watercolour splashes on chest
Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo
A large daisy with white petals, black linework and a yellow centre sits at the centre of the image. Soft grey shading gives the petals form, while loose splashes and drips in blue, pink, green and yellow surround the flower. The tattoo is shown close up on pale skin above a dark top, with the neckline visible at the top of the frame.

The paint had gone tacky in the heat before Dell could blend it, so the blue splash she meant to sit beneath the daisy ran into the grey breeze-block instead. She stood back with the brush dripping and swore at it in the flat voice she kept for the grocery man. Out past the petrol pumps the road shimmered all the way to the hills, empty except for a dust devil walking across the lanes as if it had somewhere to be.

The daisy was the easy part. She had painted hundreds of them on signs for the diner and the feed store, white petals going grey at the edges under a fine black pen, a yellow heart dabbed on last. Her mother had called them weeds. Dell called them stubborn, because they came up through the cracks of every lot in the county and nobody ever planted them. The splashes were a habit she had picked up from a boy who came through in a van with a box of watercolours and no plan, and who left a month later with her spare car keys and none of her money.
Hal came out of the office with two mugs of coffee and stood looking at the wall for longer than she liked. He had asked for a sign that said VACANCY in plain letters. What he got was a flower with a bruise of colour spreading out behind it. "Customers won't know what to make of that," he said. Dell took her mug and said nothing. A drip of blue had found its way down past the daisy's stem, slow and certain, leaving a thin trail on the wall.
"Leave it," she said at last. "It's still wet." Hal shrugged and went back inside. Dell watched the drip reach the gravel and sink in, and thought the first real rain of the year would have to finish the job.
