Three birds and an infinity symbol on an ankle

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

The image shows two close photographs of the same tattoo on the skin of a wrist or ankle. Three small birds in wing-spread poses, coloured green, purple and pink, sit above a bold black infinity symbol whose right loop ends in a spiral curl. The birds have soft, blended colour fills with darker outlines, while the infinity symbol is solid black, and the framing places the design in the lower half of each photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last crossing of the ring railway ran over the drowned orchard, and the birds flew it the way their keepers always had. You learned the knot for the cage door before you learned your letters, and now the clerks at Cold Spur no longer ask why three swifts are still sent out each dawn with nothing to carry but the weather.

The green one is the eldest, its wings gone patchy with frost. The purple carries the ledger tube on a thread of copper wire. The pink is the smallest and the most stubborn, and it always takes the first turn, dipping under the others before the sun clears the silos. Your grandmother said the route was drawn by someone who had lost a great deal and wanted to watch something come back. She never said who.

You follow them along the upper arc, past the water towers and the cracked glass, then down the long curl where the old seed vault sinks into the permafrost. The birds slow there. They always do. Somewhere below, a bell that nobody has rung since the thaw answers each pass with a note so low you feel it in your teeth, and the ledger on the purple bird's leg never grows heavier, because nothing is ever written on the way out.

On the last loop the pink bird lands on the rail beside you, shakes the frost from its feathers, and waits. You understand then that the figure was never meant to reach anywhere. You open the cage, count the circles out loud, and let the sky come down the colour of their wings.
