Sunflowers in a vase on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large tattoo of sunflowers in a vase covers the upper arm and reaches toward the shoulder. The flowers and vase are rendered with painterly, loose brushwork and soft shading in yellows, oranges and browns, with a green outline framing the design. The vase sits at the bottom of the composition, and the cropped view shows part of the torso and a light blue top.

The yellow never sits right in the workshop, and Master Oss tells you so every morning while you grind the petals in the stone trough. You have been at it since the thaw, pressing the heads of the sunflowers from the south terraces into a paste that stains your knuckles the colour of old brass. He says the flowers of Veyra are too proud to be bottled. You think they only want to be looked at.

Under the lean-to behind the dye vats sits a clay vase the colour of dried roses, left to the guild by the queen's grandmother and cracked along one side, mended with copper wire. Each night after the bell you fill it with the week's cut blooms and set it on the sill so the lamp can find them. The Chancellor's clerks have started to visit, pretending they have come for ledgers, and they always stop to stare at the heads turning slowly toward the window.

On the last night of the autumn fair you find the vase empty and the sunflowers laid out on the flagstones in a ring, petals facing up like a court bowing. Oss is not there. A note in his cramped hand says only: the pigment is yours now, and do not let them sell the vase.

At dawn you carry the vase down to the river and wash the paste from your fingers. The yellow runs off into the current and the water turns gold for a hundred yards before it clears. You keep the vase. Nobody in Veyra ever asks you to explain why.
