A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The last garden on the north terrace of the old ring was kept by a woman named Ysolde Marrow, who had been given the peony roots by a ferryman from the drowned coast. He said they had come up through the cracks in the sea wall, two plants with heavy heads, and that they would bloom only if someone sat with them through the dark months and did not ask them to hurry.

Ysolde sat. The settlement's children brought her bread and asked why she wasted her nights on sticks with leaves. She told them the plants were slow and that slow things keep. In the ninth winter a grey fog settled on the terrace and the lamps went out one by one, and the roots began to push up small round buds, hard as pebbles, that the children were afraid to touch.
When the buds split, the petals came out in layers, one skin folding over another, so tightly packed that a person could lose a day counting them. The ferryman came back up the ring stairs with a lantern and stood over the bloom without speaking. He said the sea had gone quiet, and that the petals had opened the way the water used to close over a boat, slow and certain.
Ysolde cut one bloom and carried it to the far gate, where the fog was thinnest, and laid it on the stone. Nobody in the ring ever learned what it was meant to tell the sea. But the next morning the ferryman's boat was tied at the steps, and the second peony had opened in the night, pale against the grey.
