Sunflower on the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A large sunflower with shaded petals and a detailed central disc fills the back of a hand, viewed from above on a grey textured surface. The petals use soft grey gradients and fine highlights, while the centre has darker, patterned shading. Dark shaded ink is also visible on the wrist above, and the warm, vignetted lighting gives the photo a faded, filtered look.

Dear Ruth,

The sunflowers along the allotment wall came up three weeks late, after the frost had gone out of the ground, and Mr Pryce swore at them every morning as if they had done it on purpose. Now they are taller than the shed. Every head turns to follow the sun across the sky, so by teatime they are all staring west at the church like a row of children waiting to be called in.
I went down yesterday with a paper bag and a hairpin and spent an hour counting the seeds in one disc. Two hundred and eighty-nine, which I think is right, because the spirals run one way and then the other, and if you lose your place you lose the whole pattern. Mr Pryce says it is the cleverest thing in the garden. He says the seeds are packed the way a pine cone is, at an angle nobody taught them, and that the flower never gets it wrong.
I have sent you a bag of them in the envelope with this letter, so do not be cross when the postman shakes it. Plant them by the back door in Leeds where the wall gets the afternoon sun, and you will have something to turn your face towards when the mill gets too loud. Write and tell me if they come up grey in the photographs, the way Dad's always did. I think you will find they are only yellow in the head of whoever is looking.
Love, Edie
