Dark fairytale pig and mermaid designs
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two torn sheets of white paper, each carrying a black line drawing with script lettering: a pig wearing a hat or cloak on the left and a long-haired mermaid with a curling tail on the right. The linework is clean and outlined with no shading, and the drawings sit on a pink and tan background. A strip labelled Dark Fairytales runs along the bottom edge.

The cloak was still warm from the pig's back when Agnes Tolley carried it down to the harbour wall, folded over both arms like a sleeping cat. Gerald had worn it all night by the range, sitting with his trotters tucked under him and complaining of the cold, though the fire roared. Nobody in Saltcombe asked a pig what he wanted. They asked him what he owed.

The mermaid was where Agnes had been told she would be, combing her hair with a bone comb on the lowest step, her tail lying in the weed like a wet rope. She did not look up. "You're late," she said, "and you've brought the wrong coat."
"It's the only coat he has."
"Then he should have given me his sweetest thing, not his warmest." She held out a hand the colour of candle wax. Agnes unfolded the cloak and turned the collar inside out, and there in red thread, stitched small by a woman who had been dead nine years, was the word Gerald. The mermaid smiled for the first time and tucked the comb behind her ear.
They did not tell Agnes what the sea would do with a name. She only watched the cloak go out across the grey water, spreading like a spilled sail, until it sank beneath the first wave. Back in the kitchen the pig's chair was empty and the range had gone cold. By supper a plump pink animal was trotting up the lane, humming a tune nobody had taught him, and he greeted every hen by name, sweetly, as if he had always known them.
