Floating island, snail and mushroom flash sheet

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink line drawing on a white background shows a floating island topped with a mountain and pine trees, a snail perched on clustered mushrooms over mossy ground, and trailing branches with hanging crystals. Small skulls, bones and dots are scattered across the page. Fine hatching and stippling give the rock and foliage texture, and the sheet uses only black ink on white.

Brother Tobias had been told the island would stay put if the bell was rung at dusk, and for eleven years it had. The monks of Saint Ysolde lived on its stony back beneath a mountain that had never been climbed from below, because from below there was only sky. Their rule was simple. Each brother kept one small garden, and every spring they carried soil up the rope ladders from the mainland fields so the pines would have something to root in.

Tobias had a snail named Pell that rode on his shoulder and disapproved of the wind. Pell had come up in a basket of moss and had never once gone back down. In the damp hollow below the lake, where the rock wept cold water, Tobias grew mushrooms in a ring of old roof slates, and the ring was the only part of the island the abbot allowed to go wild.

In the autumn the island began to drift. It was slow, the way a boat drifts when the oars are shipped, and the crystals hanging from the branches at the rim began to chime against each other. The brothers gathered to ring the bell, but the bell rope had frayed, and the abbot would not let anyone climb the high pines in that wind.

Tobias went up instead, with Pell in his collar and a pocketful of spores. He tied the frayed rope to a cedar branch and let the crystals ring. The sound carried down through the rock and out across the sky, and the island, for one night, stayed where it was. In the morning the mushrooms in the slate ring had split their caps and thrown spores like pale coins over the lake. The abbot said nothing about it, except that the snail was given the seat of honour at the Lauds table, and nobody argued.
