Death Star tied to colourful balloons on abdomen
Other · Colour · Photo
A grey and black Death Star hangs from a bunch of multicoloured balloons, drawn with fine dark strings. The balloons carry red, orange, yellow, green, blue and teal ink with soft shading, while the Death Star has greyscale shading and a blue-tinted highlight. The tattoo sits centrally on the lower abdomen, with the navel visible below it and the top pulled up above.

The balloons were already over the top field when Mrs Pryce's boy ran in shouting that something was tangled in the ash tree. Frost lay white on the ruts and the sky had that flat pewter look it gets in January, so the colours were the first thing I noticed: red, orange, teal, a yellow so bright it hurt. Then I saw what they were pulling. A grey ball the size of a hay bale hung off the strings, dented on one side, with a bluish gleam along its curve as if someone had polished it with a dishcloth.

Dad said it was a weather balloon from the base over at Harlow. Mum said nonsense, it was a christening decoration gone wrong. I said nothing, because I had climbed the ash and was close enough to see a little scorched crater on the face of it, and I knew nobody in Essex had ever launched a moon.
We cut the strings with Dad's bread knife lashed to a broom handle. The moment the last one parted, the thing gave a soft sigh and lifted, slow as a dropped feather, and turned once above the hedge as though taking our measurements. Then it drifted off over the frozen beet fields toward the sea, the balloons bobbing in a loose crowd behind it, until it shrank to a single spark and the cloud took it.
Next morning one orange balloon was caught on the gatepost, its string snipped clean. I keep it in the dresser drawer. Some mornings I swear it has moved closer to the window.
