Deathly Hallows and always script on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on a forearm shows the Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle with a circle inside and a vertical line through the circle, with two dots on the line. Ornamental scrolls curl around the triangle's base and sides, and the cursive word always runs upward from the top point. The linework is thin and even, with the photo in black and white and no colour ink visible.

Margit had been counting the bricks in the north wall since breakfast, because counting was easier than thinking about the letter in her apron pocket. The walled garden at Hollin Close had gone to bramble in the two years since Alf died, and only that morning had she got the iron gate to shut without lifting it by the hinge.

Her grandson had chalked the symbol on the potting shed door when he was seven: a triangle, a ring inside it, a line running down the middle with two dots strung along it. He said it came from a book, three old gifts a clever man had hidden in plain sight. Margit had told him that in her day clever men hid gifts in rabbit hutches and mostly lost them. He had laughed and said the gifts were never the point. The point was who you handed them to.
The solicitor in Skipton wanted a signature on the sale of the glasshouse. Margit read the clause twice, then folded the paper into a boat and set it on the water butt, where it turned slowly and went nowhere. She took the trowel instead. Beside the old quince, under the rambler Alf had grafted the year they married, she dug a hole deep enough for a cutting and firmed the soil with the heel of her boot.
She tied a length of twine round the stake, looping it in a curl the way the scrolls curled round the triangle on the shed door, and wrote the one word she could still spell without her glasses on the back of a seed packet. She pinned it under a stone. The bees found the quince blossom before she had finished, and she let them.
