Triangle and circle tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo shows a large triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical line and three dots running through it. Decorative scrolls and leaf-like curls climb the sides and sit along the base of the triangle. The linework is even and bold, and the tattoo is centred on the forearm against plain skin, with a yellow patterned fabric at the bottom edge of the frame.

Sit closer, the lot of you. The wind up here has teeth, and the guard at the bridge will not stop us for a story, though he will stop us for a cough. Good. Three brothers came down to the river at Vasheron, where the two countries had strung a wooden gate across the water, and nobody crossed without paying the keeper.

The keeper was a widow called Ilse Harrat, with a face like a walnut and a ledger she could not read. The eldest brother offered her a silver ring, a plain triangle of metal he had won at cards. She shook her head. The middle brother offered a stone with a hole worn through it, the kind you find in a stream bed. She shook her head again. The youngest had nothing to give but a length of grey thread wound round a single bead, and when he held it out, the widow laughed so hard she had to sit down on the step.
"Three gifts for a gate that has never been locked," she said, and she showed them how the gate hung on a loop of that same thread, tied in a knot her own mother had taught her. The youngest tugged the loose end. The knot slid free, the gate swung open, and the water went on as it had always gone, not caring who paid.
The brothers walked over, the eldest with his ring, the middle with his stone, the youngest whistling. Behind them three beads rolled along the planks and dropped one by one into the current. I have carried this story ever since, and the last bead is the one I keep in my pocket, so you can hear it click when I tap my coat. There. Now, who has a coin?
