Deathly Hallows symbol with script on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical line, is surrounded by ornate scrollwork and curling flourishes. A thin script word reading Always hangs down from the base of the symbol on pale skin. The tattoo is in black ink only, centred on the upper back with bra straps visible on either side.

Sit down, the lot of you, and leave that kettle be. Mrs Pellow's kettle has whistled in that kitchen since before the war, so you may as well hear this while you wait for your tea. My grandmother kept this house on the cliff above Porthcarrow, and she told me the story the night the storm took the last boats off the slip.

There were three brothers, she said, who fished the grey water beyond the headland and agreed about nothing except the weather. The eldest wanted a stone that would never sink, so he took a pebble from the cove and rubbed it smooth until it was a ring of salt and light. The second wanted a cloak that would keep him dry, so he wove one from morning fog and old fishing line, and it hung off his shoulders like a coat that was never quite there. The youngest wanted only a rod of driftwood to tap along the harbour floor and find the sunken pots. The sea laughed at him for that, but he kept it all the same.
Then the storm came up over the point, and all three went out after the last boat. Only the youngest walked back up the slip, the rod in one hand and nothing else in the other. When my grandmother asked where his brothers were, he did not answer. He pointed at the slate nailed above our front door, where somebody had chalked a single word in a loopy hand, and he said, Always. That is all the old tale says, and it is enough. The slate is still up there, and the word has never washed away, not once in all these years of rain. Now drink your tea before it goes cold like the rest of them.
