Deathly Hallows and animal silhouette on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a person in a white T-shirt with bold black print, raising one arm. A small outlined Deathly Hallows triangle sits near the wrist, drawn with thin, even lines. Below it, a solid black silhouette of an animal sits on the inner forearm, with no shading, against light skin.

Dear Nell, the boat came in again this morning without him, and Mrs Ferrier has stopped setting a place for her husband at the Sunday table, though she still lays the cloth. I write because you asked me to keep a record of the strange things on Skerrow, and this is the strangest yet.

Last Tuesday the tide left a wooden box on the shingle below the chapel. Inside was a ring of grey stone with a hole through it, a brass comb with three teeth missing, and a folded sheet of paper with a triangle drawn on it, a circle inside the triangle, and a single line running down through the middle. Old Tam says it is the sign the fishermen cut into their oars to keep the drowned from following them home. I think it is nothing but a child's drawing, but I did not tell him so.
Then the fox came. It was sitting on the harbour wall at dusk, black as a cut-out against the sea, its tail curled round its feet like a question mark. It did not run when I walked up. It looked at the box, then at me, then trotted off along the rocks toward the lighthouse. Nobody on the island keeps foxes, Nell. There are no foxes here.
I went after it yesterday with the stone in my pocket. At the lighthouse steps I found the sign carved fresh into the lintel, and beneath it, pressed into wet sand, the prints of a boy's bare feet walking out towards the tide line and not coming back. I have not told Mrs Ferrier. Come home before the autumn gales and bring your sketchbook, because I think you will want to draw this.
