Deathly Hallows symbol in ornamental linework

Black and grey · Flash

A black ink drawing of the Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical line, set on a white background. The triangle and circle are outlined in solid white, and the surrounding space is filled with dense paisley, mandala and floral motifs built from fine dots, hatching and curling lines. The design is centred and symmetrical, with a small black pen lying at the upper right.

Dear Nan,

The ovens were lit by four this morning and the flour has got into everything, including the letter I meant to post yesterday. Mr Pennock left the bakery to me in the end, along with a tin of old tools and a rule he never explained. Every cob gets three scores before it goes into the proving basket: a triangle first, then a circle inside it, then one straight line down the middle. He said the bread would rise better, and it does, though I suspect he just liked the look of it.

Last Tuesday I found a grey pebble wedged under the flour sacks, smooth as a river stone and cold enough to ache. Someone had worn a neat hole right through it. I put it on the windowsill to be rid of it, and by morning the sparrows had left crumbs around it in a tidy ring, which I had not asked them to do.

This morning, before the sky went grey over the bins, I scored the first loaf with my three marks and set it to prove. When I came back, the crust had split along the circle and nowhere else, as if the dough had been told where to open. I don't know what to make of that, so I'm sending you the heel of it wrapped in a tea towel. Eat it warm. The stone stays on the sill for now.

Your loving grandson, Tom
