Eye in triangle mandala design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A drawn tattoo design showing a detailed eye inside a large triangle, set within a circular mandala. Small fish, leaves and scrolls fill the ring, with a cross, an anchor and a heart in round dotted medallions around the edge. The work uses fine linework, stippled dotwork shading and solid black fills in black ink on pale paper, with a symmetrical, centred composition.

You stop at the Triangle Eye because the road has vanished under a foot of snow and the only light for three miles is the lamp over its door. The sign creaks above you, a painted eye inside a painted triangle, ringed with fish and anchors so that it looks less like a warning than a receipt. Inside, the landlady, Mrs Haddow, takes your coat without asking and hangs it on a hook that has clearly been waiting for it.

Dinner is salt cod and pickled herring. The other guests are two drovers who sing hymns under their breath and a customs clerk who keeps glancing at the window. Nobody mentions the sign. When you finally ask, Mrs Haddow says her grandfather painted it, a ship's carpenter who lost two boats at the Mersey mouth and swore the eye would watch the harbour for the rest of the family. "It never sleeps," she says, "so you needn't either." She sets a candle at the foot of the stairs and goes back to her ledger.
Upstairs the room is warm, and the floorboards are pitted with old nail holes like fine dotwork. You lie awake counting the fish carved into the bedpost, then the heart on the window latch, then the cross scratched into the glass. Around three the snow stops, and the silence is so complete you can hear the clerk arguing with himself through the wall. Then the candle below goes out, the front door opens on its hinges, and a voice you have not heard since childhood says your name, gently, the way someone calls you down to the water before the tide turns.
