Deathly Hallows symbol in mandala design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical line, the Deathly Hallows symbol, at the centre of a symmetrical arrangement. The surrounding area is filled with dense, ornamental filigree, paisley-like motifs and fine decorative curls drawn in precise black linework. The image is entirely black ink on white paper, with a black pen lying diagonally across the lower right corner.

Dear Tom,

The mail boat came in on Tuesday, so you can stop pretending you never received my last parcel. Mother says you have gone quiet because the galley cook reads your letters aloud, which I refuse to believe, though I have no reason to doubt it. Write to me instead. I am sitting at the kitchen table with the window open and the smell of the bakery coming up from Fish Lane, copying the thing you asked for before you sailed.
Three strokes first. A triangle, drawn against the ruler so its points touch the edge of the sheet as if they were pinning it down. Inside it a circle, and through the circle one upright line, neat as a plumb bob. Everything else I have built around those three shapes: a lace of curls, paisley teardrops, a fan of tiny crowns that Mrs Haddow would call filigree and I call stubbornness. It took four evenings and most of my eyesight.
You will laugh, but the old pattern book says a mandala is meant to be looked into rather than at, and I found I could not stop looking. Each time I finished one curl, another wanted to start beside it. On the last night I sat until midnight with the pen still uncapped, and the line in the centre stopped looking like a line. It looked like a door someone had left ajar, with a light on the far side that I was not invited to see.
Come home in October and I will show you the original. Bring the pen back if you can. It is the only thing in this house that still makes a clean mark. Your loving sister, Nell.
