Decorative capital letter with crescent moon and stars
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A large solid black decorative capital letter with curled terminals sits across the centre of the frame. A thin outlined crescent moon wraps behind it, and several small outlined stars are scattered around the letter. The ink is black and grey on smooth skin, shot straight on with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Pull that stool nearer the stove, and mind the cat, she has been sitting on the warm side since Martinmas. Now, the winter the lane flooded up to the gatepost, old Eli Sayer came up from the lower field with frost in his beard and a tin of black paint under his arm. He had not spoken a word to anyone since his wife went off to Hull, but that night he asked my mother for the big brush and the ladder.

He painted a letter on the hayloft door, an L as tall as a man, with curls at the head and the foot like the ends of a bellows. Nobody asked whose letter it was. We reckoned it was hers, and he never said otherwise. Then he cut a crescent moon from a strip of tin off the old milk churn, thin as a fingernail, and nailed it behind the letter so the two sat one over the other on the boards. The stars he pricked out with a horseshoe nail, five of them, and a sixth when the first one wore away.
Here is the strange part. On clear nights in the cold months the moon rose behind that door, and the letter threw its shadow over the snow, and the little stars seemed to sit on the shadow like crumbs on a plate. Eli would stand at the gate and count them aloud until he lost his place, then start again from the top.
He died the spring after the lambs came. We took the moon down to keep it safe, and it still sits on my mantel. But when the snow lies deep and the sky goes clear, I walk down to the lane and count six stars, and I always get to five and stop, because that is where he stopped.
