Outline stars trailing up an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a tattoo on the ankle and lower leg, showing a cluster of outlined five-pointed stars of varying sizes arranged in a curving trail. Soft grey shading sits beneath the stars and follows the sweep of the trail, giving a sense of motion. The tattoo is in black and grey only, and the close framing against a dark background keeps the stars as the clear focal point.

Sit nearer, the fire's gone to nothing and I won't shout over the sea. Mrs Abernethy's boarders always ask for the Pellow sisters' lamps, and I'll tell it the way my mother told it to me, because that's the only honest way to tell anything.

The winter the Mary Gale went out from Gullmouth, the sky over the headland lost its stars one at a time, and nobody on the cliff path could say where they'd gone. Nell Pellow, the younger of the two, swore she saw them drop down the chalk in a curving line, each one catching on a nail in the fence posts and burning there like a tin lantern. She counted ten before the cloud came in and didn't count again.

Her sister Bea took the oil can down to the slipway and lit every lamp she could reach, working from the harbour wall up toward the chapel roof. The smoke lay along the cliff in long grey sweeps, the way you'd shade a drawing to make it move, and in the murk the lamps went out and came back again like something breathing. Nell kept her tally on the back of a chandler's bill, pinned flat against the wind with her thumb.

The boat came in on the last lamp, the smallest, the one nearest the chapel, and all ten men stepped onto the stones. When I was a boy that same tin lamp still hung on the boarding house wall, cold as a key, and nobody would take it down. Mind your cup on the way out. The path is steep, and it's full of stars.
