The wind came up off the reservoir on Tuesday morning and by eleven it had got into the bandstand, the bowls pavilion and every bin in Coldharbour Park. Dennis and I spent the whole day chasing leaves round the bowling green with a yard broom and a bad temper. They would not sit still. Each one lifted off the gravel just as the broom came down, skated a yard, and turned over like a fish showing its belly.

By four o'clock I had stopped swearing at them and started counting. They went in threes, always, one leaf and then two more chasing it, and behind each little knot of them trailed a thin line of wind that the eye could follow long after the leaves had gone. Dennis said it was the sort of thing you only noticed when you were too tired to be useful. He was right, which annoyed me.

At the gate by the old sluice, where the path bends, the whole lot of them stopped at once and hung in the air, turning slowly, as if waiting for someone to read them the rules. Then the wind dropped. Everything came down soft on the wet stone, curled and gold and perfectly still.

I left them there. Dennis asked what I was doing and I said the council could pay for a leaf blower if it wanted them gone. We walked home the long way, and I didn't look back, though I could feel the swirls behind us the whole way down the hill, unfinished, like a sentence someone had decided to leave open.
